Supplying PDF artwork
Ideally PDF files should be supplied as PDF2001/A. We prefer all artwork to be supplied as high-resolution PDF format where possible. PDF’s have become the standard file format for sending files for printing, but it is important to prepare your PDF file in the correct way to avoid costly errors occurring.
Correctly supplying PDF files
When creating a PDF in Acrobat Distiller, there are job options which must be set for commercial printing. These include default resolution, compression settings and font embedding. Please ensure you choose high resolution. Compression settings for colour and greyscale should be downsampled to 300dpi with ‘auto compression’ set on high. Bitmapped (monochrome: i.e. line art) images should be set at 1200dpi. Font embedding should be set to ‘embed all fonts’.
Where images run off the side of the artwork please ensue there is 3mm bleed on all sides for example an A4 is usually 210mm x 297mm – save this as (216mm x 303mm). Crop marks may be included. However, if files are not saved in this format, we may not be able to use it as artwork or the finished size may be slightly reduced when trimmed.
CMYK not RGB please!
Please ensure that all embedded images are CMYK files. RGB images may look good on your screen but final output to print is always in CMYK. You should be aware that files converted from RGB to CMYK will not look the same printed as they appear on your screen!
Using spot colours
Artwork supplied using spot colours must conform to standard pantone references and be selected as additional colours when supplied in chosen file format.
WE DESIGN FOR YOU
When commissioning us to design & produce artwork please supply us with as much information as possible. The following points should be observed:
- If possible supply all text in a Word file. We can use this & save time & money.
- Only supply pictures & images of hi resolution. Remember that web images tend to be low resolution & will usually not be usable when enlarged.
- We can supply standard pictures from the library we subscribe to. These images are used for backgrounds & embellishing the designs but tend to be of a broader subject matter. Please ask for more details
Where files are supplied we will show you a digital proof on request. When we create designs we will supply PDF proofs via e-mail as well as digital proofs on request. In both instances these will be accurate for content but should only be used as an indication of colour. There may be a difference in colour from digital to litho printing.
Any artwork we produce takes us time & therefore has a cost attachment. Artwork & design is usually included in any quotations for printing we submit. However, in the event of the print order being cancelled or not continued with, any costs for artwork & design will be invoiced.
